- Southlake I picked up a used camera for a sort of knock-about second camera theother day - it’s a SamsungGX-1L,and so far I’m very happy with it.
- Redtail Hawk Saw this guy (girl?) at a Wal-Mart parking lot the other day - wasfairly skittish, but let me get close enough for a couple of shots.Taken with our Pentaxk-x& DA55-300mmlens. Click ‘read more’ to see the slideshow...
- Walking with Daddy I decided to take my son for a walk yesterday evening so that Mom couldhave a break. I went ahead and took along the camera with a 50mm lensand had a first go with a circular polarizing filter that I picked upthe other day. (click any image to enlarge)

- Argyle, TX Had the day off in remembrance of MLK, and Kelly had to work, so Idecided to go on walkabout. Wanted to take a hike, but the trail I hadin mind was muddy, and therefore closed. On the way, I stopped throughArgyle and took a few pics.
- mobile site version Had fun messing withdashcode today. Takes verylittle time to build a little web app based on an rss feed, and the endresult is a mobile version of this sitehere. It even works whenoffline in Safari, though not when added to the homescreen, for somereason I can’t yet fathom. Short link dump:
- A Monarch
- Tomato, Kale and White Bean Soup BackgroundWe recently joined a CSA, andalthough we haven’t received our first share yet, we’ve already beentrying to integrate more fruits and vegetables in our diet. Two nightsago, we had a delicious salad with romaine, kale and grilled chicken, peppersand onions. We loved it, but the kale was a bit... tough. We had somekale in a salad at a friend’s house that must have been a differentvariety, because it was much better raw. Anyway, I was making dinnertonight, and tried to figure out a way to make kale a less robust partof the meal. Here’s what I came up with:
- bee

- Setting up nagios3 to send prowl notifications Updated 27.i.2010 to reflect mig5’s corrections
- Quick recipe to easily migrate a drupal installation to CVS I recently had to update a number of drupal installations, some of themquite old. Here is a bash "few-liner" to migrate an install to CVS,making it much easier to update in the future.
- Chevre chop salad I made this the other night from what looked good and was on sale at thestore, and it turned out pretty well - so, I thought I would share whatI came up with.
- Strange networking problems after disk copy Hope this helps someone - if you copy your old disk on to a new one whenupgrading, and then have strange networking problems, uninstall LittleSnitch andreboot. Of course, if you never had it installed, this tip probablywon’t help you! In particular, some applications could access the‘net, and others just sat and hung. Luckily I figured it out after justa couple minutes, or I would really have been leaving some head-shapedindentations in the desk...
- Indian Paintbrush Taken on a nice ride Tuesday evening.
- Perfex I appreciate good tools wherever I find them - whether they be software, rhetorical, or physical. We ran across a Perfex peppermillat Sur La Table several weeks ago, and instantly fell in love. Compactand dense, with a little door to load peppercorns without anydissasembly - perfect! Only one problem - good luck finding one for lessthan seventy bucks... Cheap as I am, this was a problem.
- Fondue Sauce for Pasta Whipped this up the other night, and we enjoyed it, so I thought I’dshare. Convergence nearly gaurantees that a similar or identical recipeexists elsewhere, but I believe that I still get to call this aoriginal, since I’m ignorant of any prior art... All measurements areapproximate, modify to suit.
- Full integration of mutt and the OS X Addressbook http://reluctanthacker.rollett.org/sites/default/files/sites/default/files/add_address.sh_.txt
- Using quicklook as an image viewer for mutt So, I’m wavering between email clients yet again - giving themutt+isynccombination a try this time... Mutt’s disconnected imap support issadly lacking, and I’ve messed withofflineimapbefore, but found it a bit too fiddly. Anyway, I thought quicklook wouldbe a nice way to view the many highly important images I often get in myemail, as it pops up quickly, and doesn’t require an applicationswitch. A quick google scared up the ‘qlmanage’ utility, and I wrote aquick wrapper script to provide mutt with a 0 exit status instead of the130 that qlmanage spits out. (ummm, whatever, apple) This prevents muttfrom spitting out the ‘press any key to continue’ message andrequiring an EXTRA KEYSTROKE. (picky, picky...)

- Thoughts on David Weinberger's drupalcon keynote today So David Weinbergergave an interesting keynote this morning, entitled "Is drupal moral?".It was engaging and funny, but I ultimately felt that his conclusion (asI read it) was fairly weak. Essentially, he finished off by assertingthat Morality is engaging that that is different from you. Therefore,Drupal is moral, because it provides a means for doing so.
- going to drupalcon... On bambi?
- Vimafarian So in an earlierpost,I complained aboutvimperator not beingavailable for Safari. Well, like anyone else that’s completely nutswould do, I decided to pull myself up by my own bootstraps and have ago. You may find (and install) my limited but functional beginningshere.
- recommended for Safari - ClickToFlash Trying out the new Safari 4beta today. Working very nicelyso far - fast, light on cpu, etc. Still, I don’t know if I can go onfor too long withoutvimperator! Anyway, thepoint of this post was to recommendClickToFlash. Itdoes a nice job of blocking flash plugins, but also lets you whitelistby URL, which is nice for those few sites that you do want to see flashstuff on...
- miscellaneous shell-fu Not too much to share today - just a couple neat little things I ranacross over the past couple of days, to wit:
- Vim Drupal BlogAPI client - now with 100% more url opening! http://reluctanthacker.rollett.org/sites/default/files/sites/default/files/drupal_blog_dist.vim
- Editing python with Vim Found a nice post on this kind of stuffhere.I haven’t implemented all of it by any means, but the omnifunc codecompletion andsnippetsEmu arequite nice. Also did my own hacky perversion of the :make command..vimrc excerpt follows...
- Changing the oil No, the title isn’t some cool metaphor - this post really is aboutchanging the oil. Anyway, the quick change places would have you changeyour oil every 3,000 miles. HOWEVER, they want to sell you oil, so theymight be erring on the side of caution, so to speak. My car’smanufacturer recommends changing the oil every 10,000 miles. HOWEVER,they want to sell me a new car. So, after many years of wondering aboutthis conundrum, I’ve decided that the sweet spot between unnecessaryoil changes and waiting too long must lie between those two extremes.Hey, it sounds good, right? So, I’m going to go 6,500 miles between oilchanges.
- new theme! My blog is back from the dead! Well, maybe for the day, anyway... (hadthe day off from work because of an ice storm) I decided to jazz it up alittle, and installed the excellentnitobe theme. It’s pretty much bonestock, except for the header images, which were all taken by me or mywife. If you’re curious where any of them were taken, just post acomment and I’ll be happy to tell ya...
- Drupal BlogAPI client - new version http://reluctanthacker.rollett.org/sites/default/files/sites/default/files/drupal_blog.vim_.sanitized
- Applescript to open a different account's INBOX in Mail.app A while ago, I threatened to post this script, and then it slipped mymind, mostly because I switched toGyazmail. At any rate, oneof the most frustrating things about Mail.app to me was having to getout the mouse to switch between the inboxes of my various emailaccounts, especially once I got MailAct-On working so nicely. Theapplescript was harder to figure out than it perhaps should have been,so here it is in the hopes that it will help someone.
- Improvements to the Vim drupal blogging client I’ve made a few improvements to my Drupal blogging client, first spokenabout here. It now has theability to publish and unpublish posts, delete posts, and create andedit free tags (folksonomy). The free tagging feature requires a modulethat I’ve packaged up for parsing tags in the post body - just waitingon permission from the author of the sample code I modified beforeposting that. Hopefully it’ll be coming soon!
- Setting Screen's title to the currently running process with bash This is the first of a series of at least two posts about how I’veconfigured the excellent GnuScreen to fit my needs and make memore productive.
- Creating a regex for finding credit card numbers with grep Ugly regex:
- Posting to a drupal blog from Vim (with side forays into uploading and free tagging) So, we are finally getting closer to the long-awaited post (ha!) aboutposting to drupal from vim. I’ve been having a lot of fun making thisplug-in suit my needs, and making it truly easy to post. Python hasn’tbeen too hard to learn - vim scripting is truly a weird, weird language.
- Paying Uncle Sam Well, I’m working on taxes today, so "normal" posting will resumelater. Planning a write-up on my improvements to the Vim blogging clientI posted about earlier... (tags are working as you can see!)
- This is a test entry I’m posting this from vim with a plugin taken fromyyhh.org.If you can read this, it’s working ;-)Update: My modifications are coming along - the following image wasuploaded from Vim...{width=”682”height=”523”}
- taking notes with bash + vim A co-worker sold me on the utility of having a program likeYojimbo. However, I’m toocheap to shell out the $39 for a license, and I prefer to have vi keybindings, and complete keyboard control. I found an excellent post atmake-believe.orgwhich describes a system for note-taking using a little bash magic forsearching and command line tab completion, and vim for editing. I likedit a lot, but decided to add tagging to the system. Read on to find outhow I did it.
- easy way to clean up html While I was working on a website migration for work, I found myselfwanting a way to preserve formatting without keeping really poorlyformatted html. (probably made by Word, a lot of blockquotes instead oflist tags, etc.)
- MacVim + ODBInputManager == happiness So, MacOS offers some emacs key bindings through-out the OS. Great, yousay -but I use vi, and I don’t want to waste years of muscle memory! (Thismakes youa big geek, by the way - I’ve come to terms with it...) So, you havetwo options you can:
- more on gyazmail Anyway, it’s been a while since the previous post, but luckily, I have no readers.
- Gyazmail - love child of Mail.app and mutt? I may have found what is, for me, the ultimate OS X mail client. Myrequirements are thus:
